Barns Buildings: More Space, Better Utility

Barns buildings are defined as a building in which the grains are stored. It is mainly used for storage reasons. It is mostly a covered workplace. It may be used to store grains or for harboring the animals or for keeping various equipments.

Barns buildings are mostly placed in and around farms so that it is easier to keep animals or farm equipments. It is better for transportation and due to its proximity to farms it is also very beneficial for all the purposes. Initially in older times, the barn buildings used to be made from the timber available on the farm. At some places, it was also made of stone, where stone was available at much cheaper rates. Timber farms were made strong enough so that it may help to withstand storms and very heavy loads of animal supply. In some places, dairy barns were also formed. They are typically buildings with roofs which are two sided and it has slopes on both sides. These types of barns allow an increase in headspace and maximize the upper space of the building.

Also, barns buildings were made of wood and when these were filled with hay, it used to catch fire very frequently due to heat or any friction leading to huge amount of losses to the farm owners. So their formation reduced in numbers. But after the 1940’s the barns were thrashed down by the tractors and they were replaced by barns made of galvanized steel or plywood.

The uses of older style of barns buildings were that it had a large roof space, which was very useful to store hay, and sometimes-even grains were stored. It also had a large door at the top of the barn, which used to open up to, store and keep in hay or store more stuff within it. The hay or grains, which are needed to store or keep in that, were taken to that level with the help of pulleys or machine systems. A trolley could also be used to take the stuff to that level and it ran along the track attached to the top level of that edge.

In some places when the barns buildings were attached to the farm houses, the daily chores of the farms could be done very easily. Barns buildings usually have pens of large sizes and structures. It is useful to store animals, which could be both small and large. The barns which house large animals are mainly placed on lower floors so that they are easier to move and transfer and the barns used to house large animals are called as stalls.

The other features of barns buildings are a tack room where saddles are kept, a feed room is there which consists of animal feed, a drive bay, which consists of large corridor for animals and machinery and a silo which contains of fermented grain.

Now a days many types of barns are formed such as Revolution barns, Gable barns, Gambrel barns, Raised barns and Shed Barns and many others.
